The Murder of Laquan Mcdonald

17-year-old Laquan Mcdonald was shot and killed by Chicago PD officer, Jason Van Dyke. Laquan Mcdonald was from the 37th ward of Chicago and a student at Sullivan House High School.

Mcdonald, was said to be allegedly armed with a 3-inch knife and also allegedly according to *some*  news outlets toxicology reports confirmed that Mcdonald had the dissociative hallucinogen PCP in his system, however, the toxicology report which was released with Mcdonalds Autopsy and signed by toxicologist Peter Koin shows that he was not tested for PCP and tested negative for 3 other substances.

The police were called to 4100 S Pulaski rd at about 9:45pm, October 20th, to investigate Mcdonald because he allegedly had threatened one person and allegedly tried to break into the car of another person.

*Notice my usage of alleged*.

When officers Confronted the teen, he allegedly used the 3-inch knife to slash the tire of a police cruiser. He then started to walk away from officers and was advised to drop the knife. Mcdonald continued to walk away and then was riddled with 16 bullets by officer Jason Van Dyke. After Mcdonald was shot and hit the ground officer Van Dyke continued to shoot the teen repeatedly.

Video Footage of Laquan Mcdonald being shot by Chicago PG officer Jason Van Dyke

Officer, Jason Van Dyke, 37, was born in Hinsdale, Illinois. A graduate of Hinsdale South High School, Van Dyke went on to obtain a bachelor's degree, in criminal justice from St. Xavier University. He is a 14 year veteran of the Chicago Police department, married and has children. At least 20 citizen complaints from excessive force to racial slurs, have been filed against officer Van Dyke since 2001, one of which cost the city $500,000 in a civil lawsuit but none resulted in disciplinary action. Van dyke was on paid desk duty but after being charged with first-degree murder on Tuesday November 24th, 2015, he turned himself in to authorities and was ordered held without bond.

Cook County State's attorney Anita Alvarez said, "It is my determination that this defendant's actions -- of shooting Laquan McDonald when he did not pose an immediate threat of great bodily harm or death, and his subsequent actions of shooting Laquan McDonald while he lay on the ground after previously being struck by gunfire --- were not justified and they were not a proper use of deadly force by this police officer."

Have you asked yourself the most important question yet???? Why the HECK is this just now gaining traction in the media if it happened last year???

Let's get Nostalgic for a moment: Let's go back to last year, 2014, when this first happened. This was how they were reporting this story the day after Mcdonald was shot and killed via the Chicago Tribune.

Chicago police shot and killed a 17-year-old boy on the Southwest Side after the teen refused to put down a knife, authorities said.
Police received a call of someone trying to break into cars near 40th and Karlov in Archer Heights around 9:45 p.m. Monday, according to Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.
A squad car arrived on the scene, and officers spotted the teen -- later identified as Laquan McDonald -- standing next to a car with a knife in his hand, Camden said. The teen began walking toward Pulaski Road and ignored the officers' requests to drop the knife, Camden said.
"He's got a 100-yard stare. He's staring blankly," Camden said of the teen. "[He] walked up to a car and stabbed the tire of the car and kept walking."
Officers remained in their car and followed McDonald as he walked south on Pulaski Road. More officers arrived and police tried to box the teen in with two squad cars, Camden said. McDonald punctured one of the squad car's front passenger-side tires and damaged the front windshield, police and Camden said.
Officers got out of their car and began approaching McDonald, again telling him to drop the knife, Camden said. The boy allegedly lunged at police, and one of the officers opened fire.
McDonald was shot in the chest and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:42 p.m. He lived in the 500 block of North Springfield Avenue, about 5 miles from where he was shot.
Camden said a knife was recovered from the scene. A statement from Police News Affairs said no officers were injured.
Camden said none of the officers who responded had a Taser to use on the teen and were trying to detain him long enough for one to arrive. He said officers were forced to defend themselves.
"When police tell you to drop a weapon, all you have to do is drop it," Camden said.
As with all Chicago police-involved shootings, the Independent Police Review Authority was investigating.
By reading this article and several others from last year. I could conclude that they were just trying to pass this off as a typical black kid shot by the police because the police officer was trying to defend himself because he was ooooh so scared for his life narrative. The usual story that they sell to the people to justify them wrongfully murdering a black teen.
The part that I have highlighted is interesting to me because they blatantly lied and said that he had lunged at the cops. This intrigues me because the officers lawyer repeatedly states that his client feels deep down in his heart that his actions were justified. Well judging by my logic if you feel like you were justified in shooting a man who appeared to be of no threat to you and was actually walking away from you 16 times why not let the evidence speak for itself?!? Why lie about events that actually never happened? and let's not forget that at this point video footage had not been released.
After some time the story disappeared. No one was talking about it. No one was paying attention to it. It had vanished, until allegedly a city whistleblower contacted journalist Jamie Kalven and attorney Craig Futterman concerned that Laquan Mcdonald's case wasn't being investigated as it should. The source told them that, "there was a video and it is horrific," Kalven said. Without this video Van dyke probably would have never been charged with first degree murder.
Was this the first sign of a cover-up by the Chicago PD?!?! Something definitely smells fishy! This video was super critical for this case and it's evident that the Chicago PD were well aware of that. In December of 2014 Kalven and Futtermen issued a statement revealing that there was a dash cam video and demanded it's release to the public. By febuary Kalven had obtained a copy of the autopsy for Mcdonald which refuted the claims that Mcdonald had died from a single gunshot wound to the chest and in fact he had been shot 16 times.
A month after Kalven obtained the Mcdonald autopsy, the city council approved a $5 million dollar settlement with Mcdonald's family which included a provision for keeping the video confidential.
In May, Carol Marin reported that video from a security camera at a Burger King on the scene had been deleted hours after the shooting. The Security camera video at burger king would have showed what happened leading up to the shooting. There were also witnesses on the scene that said they were shooed away from the crime scene after Mcdonald had been shot.
Laquan McDonald's Autopsy

Apparently there is a history with Chicago police department and the killings of civilians without any type of recourse. Chicago's mayor Rahm Emmanuel is swaying the issue in the direction of this just being a case of a bad cop when its obviously a city government issue. The cop may have been the one to pull the trigger but he wasn't alone in covering up the murder of this black teen. Everyone involved should be held accountable.

There is so much with this case and with the missing hours of footage and no witness accounts lets hope we can get a conviction on this one In my opinion the video footage that we do have available is enough to tell what went on on October 20th, 2014.

What do you think about the Laquan Mcdonald case?!?

Thanks for reading!
Peace, Love and Happiness,

Meeng
